Eskating cyclist, gamer and enjoyer of anime. Probably an artist. Also I code sometimes, pretty much just to mod titanfall 2 tho.

Introverted, yet I enjoy discussion to a fault.

  • “Bro”, butter is literally just a hydrocarbon. As in carbon atoms and hydrogen atoms.

Making it in the lab produces chemically identical molecules.

As in, literally the same thing. Like actually for real no difference. Including however bad or healthy it is to eat.

Any nuances in the real thing will be from impurities that would have to be added to the lab produced stuff, should you want to.

The real difference is how it is made, not in what it produces. Meaning the synthetic option can be produced without livestock, and potentially using much less energy and land.

  • You don’t use DirectX on Linux, as it is a windows API.

Instead, you use DXVK or VKD3D which provide DirectX functionality, but while translating the actual GPU calls to Vulkan.

If you have installed the Linux version of Steam (not the windows version inside wine) Steam will handle everything for you after you enable steam play for all titles in settings.

In steam, you can choose a default proton/wine version to use, and also set one for each game in the game properties.

For Heroic, it should install these things automatically, but this may be broken. It wasn’t working for me last I needed it.

Instead, you can use protonUP-QT to download additional versions of wine, which can then be used in Heroic. GE versions should come with DXVK and VKD3D already.

If you need a particular dependency (like vcrun), this can be installed using winetricks/protontricks.

When using protontricks, select the game, then select installing dependencies to the default prefix.

For Heroic, open the settings for a game. There should be a button to access winetricks, from there select default prefix, then install dependencies.

Find your dependency, and install it.

  • Yeah.

There’s a youtuber who’s had a static image on the switch oled on ever since it came out. He makes a yearly check-up video showing the progress on the burn-in.

Suffice to say in normal use OLED burn-in is essentially a thing of the past. It’s only still a thing on extreme brightness TVs where the panel is pushed to the very limit in terms of how much voltage it can handle.

At dimmed brightness, downloading some games, it won’t be an issue.

  • My monitor is ultrawide. It’s cropping off the top and bottom, fitting it into the horizontal resolution of 1080p, which is 1920. Vertical hence ends up at 804.

Why would the line about encoding on the GPU suggest AV1 is supported? GPUs can encode using lots of codecs. Are your files AV1?

My card does support AV1, and I use it in OBS, but it also supports H264, HEVC and even older formats. In OBS you choose whatever supported encoding you like.

Steam seems to just use H264 with no option to use something newer.

  • Or just for some catharsis?

Yes. When it comes to communication on things that don’t actually significantly impact reality, such as governmental policy, was there ever any greater point than that? (Except for when fiction comments on things like governmental policy.)

The only way to win a game of “immovable object vs unstoppable force” is to not play at all.

The logical endpoint of that logic is both of us deleting our accounts and never interacting with others online again.

    I don’t subscribe to it.
