  • I mean they aren’t wrong. From an efficiency standpoint, current AI is like using a 350hp car engine to turn a childs rock tumbler, or spin art thingy. Sure, it produces some interesting outputs, at the cost of way too much energy for what is being done. That is the current scenario of using generalized compute or even high end GPUs for AI.

Best I can tell is, the “way forward” is further development of ASICs that are specific to the model being run. This should increase efficiency, decrease the ecological impact (less electricity usage) and free up silicon and components, possibly decreasing price and increasing availablity of things like consumer graphics cards again (but I won’t hold my breath for that part).

Yes. This is apparently so much of a problem that US and other nations include this in security training for military personnel and contractors. They literally teach you not to get in arguments online about weapons capabilities and whatnot because they know people are dumb enough to post classified info just so they can be like “ackshually…” on an internet forum.

  • Several tech YouTubers have talked about moving entirely to Jellyfin or similar, self-hosting their own movies and TV series from legally owned, ripped copies from their own DVD or Bluray collection.

It takes some work and time to rip, encode, and organize the files. But if you want to go this route, there has probably never been a better time. You can routinely purchase used DVDs and Bluray from thrift stores for a few bucks per disc… sometimes less. If I had a server and hard disk space I’d probably be going this route for media consumption.

Eventually the DVDs will go away entirely and then it will be impossible to create your own legal archival copies.

  • Not a Boomer, but did get an internship that eventually became a full time job this way, during the post-2008 recession.

I got laid off and wasn’t getting any solid leads from traditional application processes or the town “career center” so I made a list of businesses in walking distance of eachother that might need my services, printed a few dozen copies of my resume, and beat the streets. I just walked in and asked for a manager but settled for whoever would talk to me, gave my brief elevator pitch, left a resume and contact info. A few called me and one actually worked out.

It is very humbling but it can work.

  • Whether you’re left, right, or center, focus on becoming ungovernable.

If you build up your local community and supporting institutions, and commit to ignoring unjust laws, you can greatly minimize the degree to which anything at the federal level impacts you.

This involves a lot of self sufficiency and privacy efforts that many are resistent to because of the loss of convenience, but it is well worth it.

  • Little bit of inside baseball here. One challenge is they would have to pick a new candidate prior to the convention, in order to meet the filing deadline to get listed on the Ohio ballot. It is not likely they win Ohio if people have to write them in. So they can’t just go to a brokered convention and hash it out in realtime.

Secondarily, per campaign finance regulations, they cannot just dump the ticket and then transfer the campaign cash to a new slate of candidates. If Biden were to step down, they’re stuck with Harris, otherwise they cannot use that money. If they somehow convince both to step aside, they have to raise all new money to finance the rest of the campaign, and the time between the convention and the actual election is not a lot of time to raise money (let alone use it wisely).
